“How Does The Holy Spirit Indwell, Guide, & Influence, the Christian?”

Part 1 – “The Holy Spirit Works In The Christian Through The Word”

Introduction

1. The rise of mysticism and emotionalism has played a large role in attributing to the Holy Spirit things that we can be certain should not be.

a. Professed Divine revelation
b. Professed miracles –
c. Professed spiritual contacts and direct faith
d. Professed direct leading

2. True spirituality is – Fearing God, and keeping His commandments as defined by His word.

I. The Holy Spirit Works In The Life of The Christian

A. The question is NOT – “DOES the Holy Spirit Dwell In The Christian?”

1. These passages clearly teach that the Holy Spirit dwells in the child of God - 1 Cor. 3:16; 6:19; Romans 8:9; 2 Tim. 1:14

B. The question is “HOW DOES the Holy Spirit Dwell In The Christian?”

1. God Dwells in us – 2 Cor. 6:16; 1 John 4:12

2. Jesus dwells in us - Jn 14:20; Eph. 3:17

3. HOW? - John 14:23,24; 15:1-8; 2 John 1:7-9

C. The Holy Spirit Dwells in us the same way that the Father and Son dwell in us!

1. Not Incarnation - (Not Personally)

2. Not Mere Omnipresence -

3. Not Miraculous

D. The Holy Spirit Dwells In, Guides, & Influences Only Through The Word!

1. Why is so difficult for some to see that the Holy Spirit dwells in the Christian through the medium of the Word? - Galatians 3:2

2. The chart below demonstrates clearly that every action that takes place in the life of an individual attributed to the Holy Spirit, the Word which He revealed, performs the same action.

E. What Does The Holy Spirit Do Today That He Does Not Accomplish Through The Word?

1. Provides everything we need - 2 Timothy 3:16,17

a. Doctrine? – 1 Tim 4:12-16
b. Reproof? – 2 Tim. 4:2-4
c. Correction? – Acts 2:36,37; 2 Tim 2:25
d. Instruction in righteousness? - Psalm 119:9, 11
e. Perfection? – 2 Pet 1:3; Ep. 4:13,15

2. Powerful enough to convert, fight with, and build up! - Hebrews 4:12

a. Living – John 6:63; 1 Peter 1:23
b. Powerful - Jeremiah 23:29
c. Sharper than two edged sword – Ep. 6:17
d. Piercing into soul & spirit – Acts 2:37
e. Discerner between thoughts & intents of the heart - Ephes. 5:13

3. This does not mean that the Holy Spirit is the word . . . but that the Holy Spirit works through the word to carry out His work in the lives of God’s people.

Conclusion:

1. There is no indication that the Holy Spirit works in the lives of people today in any way separate and apart from the word.

a. If the Holy Spirit dwells in me, I have a close, personal, intimate relationship with him and He with me because I allow Him to lead me and influence me by His Word.
2. It is on the same basis that I have fellowship with Jesus and the Father. (2 John 1:7-9)

2. Through obedience to the word, and trust in his promise, you can have the Spirit in you, too. – He will lead you – but He will not drag you!

If you would have the Holy Spirit dwell in you, you must allow the word to dwell in you, for that is how it is done.

1. Indwells

Holy Spirit

1 Cor. 6:19 (NKJV)  Or do you not know that your body is the temple of the Holy Spirit who is in you, whom you have from God, and you are not your own?

The Word

Col. 3:16 (NKJV)  Let the word of Christ dwell in you richly in all wisdom, teaching and admonishing one another in psalms and hymns and spiritual songs, singing with grace in your hearts to the Lord.

2. Convicts – Converts

Holy Spirit

John 16:7-8 (NKJV)   [8] And when He has come, He will convict the world of sin, and of righteousness, and of judgment: . . .

The Word

Psalm 19:7 (NKJV)  The law of the Lord is perfect, converting the soul; The testimony of the Lord is sure, making wise the simple;

Titus 1:9 (NKJV)   holding fast the faithful word as he has been taught, that he may be able, by sound doctrine, both to exhort and convict those who contradict.

Hebrews 4:12 (NKJV)  For the word of God is living and powerful, and sharper than any two-edged sword, piercing even to the division of soul and spirit, and of joints and marrow, and is a discerner of the thoughts and intents of the heart.

3. Begets

Holy Spirit

John 3:6-8 (NKJV)  That which is born of the flesh is flesh, and that which is born of the Spirit is spirit. [7] Do not marvel that I said to you, 'You must be born again.' [8] The wind blows where it wishes, and you hear the sound of it, but cannot tell where it comes from and where it goes. So is everyone who is born of the Spirit."

Galatians 4:29 (NKJV)  But, as he who was born according to the flesh then persecuted him who was born according to the Spirit, even so it is now.

The Word

1 Cor. 4:15 (NKJV)  . . .  you do not have many fathers; for in Christ Jesus I have begotten you through the gospel.

James 1:18 (NKJV)  Of His own will He brought us forth by the word of truth,

1 Peter 1:22-25 (NKJV)   [23] having been born again, not of corruptible seed but incorruptible, through the word of God which lives and abides forever, . . .  this is the word which by the gospel was preached to you.

Washes

Holy Spirit

1 Cor. 6:11 (NKJV)  And such were some of you. But you were washed, but you were sanctified, but you were justified in the name of the Lord Jesus and by the Spirit of our God.

1 Peter 1:22 (NKJV)  Since you have purified your souls in obeying the truth through the Spirit in sincere love of the brethren, love one another fervently with a pure heart,

The Word

John 15:3 (NKJV)  You are already clean because of the word which I have spoken to you.

Ephes. 5:26 (NKJV)  that He might sanctify and cleanse her with the washing of water by the word,

Reconciles

Holy Spirit

Ephes. 2:16-18 (NKJV)  and that He might reconcile them both to God in one body through the cross, thereby putting to death the enmity. [17] And He came and preached peace to you who were afar off and to those who were near. [18] For through Him we both have access by one Spirit to the Father.

The Word

2 Cor. 5:17-20 (NKJV)   Therefore, if anyone is in Christ, he is a new creation; old things have passed away; behold, all things have become new. [18] Now all things are of God, who has reconciled us to Himself through Jesus Christ, and has given us the ministry of reconciliation, [19] that is, that God was in Christ reconciling the world to Himself, not imputing their trespasses to them, and has committed to us the word of reconciliation. [20] Now then, we are ambassadors for Christ, as though God were pleading through us: we implore you on Christ's behalf, be reconciled to God.

Gives Life

Holy Spirit

John 6:63 (NKJV)  It is the Spirit who gives life; the flesh profits nothing. The words that I speak to you are spirit, and they are life.

The Word

Psalm 119:50 (NKJV)  This is my comfort in my affliction, For Your word has given me life.

Psalm 119:93 (NKJV)  I will never forget Your precepts, For by them You have given me life.

John 6:68 (NKJV)  But Simon Peter answered Him, "Lord, to whom shall we go? You have the words of eternal life.

Saves

Holy Spirit

Titus 3:5-7 (NKJV)  not by works of righteousness which we have done, but according to His mercy He saved us, through the washing of regeneration and renewing of the Holy Spirit, [6] whom He poured out on us abundantly through Jesus Christ our Savior, [7] that having been justified by His grace we should become heirs according to the hope of eternal life.

The Word

Romans 1:16 (NKJV)  For I am not ashamed of the gospel of Christ, for it is the power of God to salvation for everyone who believes, for the Jew first and also for the Greek.

1 Cor. 15:1-3 (NKJV)  Moreover, brethren, I declare to you the gospel which I preached to you, which also you received and in which you stand, [2] by which also you are saved, if you hold fast that word which I preached to you--unless you believed in vain. [3] For I delivered to you first of all that which I also received: that Christ died for our sins according to the Scriptures,

James 1:21-22 (NKJV)  Therefore lay aside all filthiness and overflow of wickedness, and receive with meekness the implanted word, which is able to save your souls. [22] But be doers of the word, and not hearers only, deceiving yourselves.

Justifies

Holy Spirit

1 Cor. 6:11 (NKJV)  And such were some of you. But you were washed, but you were sanctified, but you were justified in the name of the Lord Jesus and by the Spirit of our God.

The Word

Romans 1:16-17 (NKJV)  For I am not ashamed of the gospel of Christ, for it is the power of God to salvation for everyone who believes, for the Jew first and also for the Greek. [17] For in it the righteousness of God is revealed from faith to faith; as it is written, "The just shall live by faith."

Romans 5:1 (NKJV)   Therefore, having been justified by faith, we have peace with God through our Lord Jesus Christ,

Romans 10:17 (NKJV)   So then faith comes by hearing, and hearing by the word of God.

Sanctifies

Holy Spirit

Romans 15:16 (NKJV)  that I might be a minister of Jesus Christ to the Gentiles, ministering the gospel of God, that the offering of the Gentiles might be acceptable, sanctified by the Holy Spirit.

The Word

John 17:17 (NKJV)   Sanctify them by Your truth. Your word is truth.

2 Thes. 2:13-14 (NKJV)   But we are bound to give thanks to God always for you, brethren beloved by the Lord, because God from the beginning chose you for salvation through sanctification by the Spirit and belief in the truth, [14] to which He called you by our gospel, for the obtaining of the glory of our Lord Jesus Christ.

Comforts

Holy Spirit

Acts 9:31 (NKJV)   Then the churches throughout all Judea, Galilee, and Samaria had peace and were edified. And walking in the fear of the Lord and in the comfort of the Holy Spirit, they were multiplied.

The Word

Romans 15:4 (NKJV)  For whatever things were written before were written for our learning, that we through the patience and comfort of the Scriptures might have hope.

1 Thes. 4:18 (NKJV)  Therefore comfort one another with these words.

Guides

Holy Spirit

John 16:13 (NKJV)   However, when He, the Spirit of truth, has come, He will guide you into all truth; for He will not speak on His own authority, but whatever He hears He will speak; and He will tell you things to come.

Romans 8:14 (NKJV)   For as many as are led by the Spirit of God, these are sons of God.

The Word

Psalm 119:11 (NKJV)   Your word I have hidden in my heart, That I might not sin against You!

Psalm 119:105 (NKJV)   Your word is a lamp to my feet And a light to my path.

2 Tim. 3:16-4:4 (NKJV)  All Scripture is given by inspiration of God, and is profitable for doctrine, for reproof, for correction, for instruction in righteousness, [17] that the man of God may be complete, thoroughly equipped for every good work.  [4:1] I charge you therefore before God and the Lord Jesus Christ, who will judge the living and the dead at His appearing and His kingdom: [2] Preach the word! Be ready in season and out of season. Convince, rebuke, exhort, with all longsuffering and teaching. [3] For the time will come when they will not endure sound doctrine, but according to their own desires, because they have itching ears, they will heap up for themselves teachers; [4] and they will turn their ears away from the truth, and be turned aside to fables.

Instructs

Holy Spirit

Neh. 9:20 (NKJV)   You also gave Your good Spirit to instruct them, And did not withhold Your manna from their mouth, And gave them water for their thirst.

John 14:26 (NKJV)   But the Helper, the Holy Spirit, whom the Father will send in My name, He will teach you all things, and bring to your remembrance all things that I said to you.

The Word

John 6:44-45 (NKJV)      No one can come to Me unless the Father who sent Me draws him; and I will raise him up at the last day. [45] It is written in the prophets, 'And they shall all be taught by God.' Therefore everyone who has heard and learned from the Father comes to Me.

2 Tim 3:16-4:4

Sheds Love

Holy Spirit

Romans 5:5 (NKJV)  Now hope does not disappoint, because the love of God has been poured out in our hearts by the Holy Spirit who was given to us.

The Word

1 John 2:3-5 (NKJV)  Now by this we know that we know Him, if we keep His commandments. [4] He who says, "I know Him," and does not keep His commandments, is a liar, and the truth is not in him. [5] But whoever keeps His word, truly the love of God is perfected in him. By this we know that we are in Him.

1 John 3:11 (NKJV)  For this is the message that you heard from the beginning, that we should love one another,

1 John 3:23 (NKJV)  And this is His commandment: that we should believe on the name of His Son Jesus Christ and love one another, as He gave us commandment.

1 John 5:3 (NKJV)   For this is the love of God, that we keep His commandments. And His commandments are not burdensome.

Bears Witness

Holy Spirit

John 15:26 (NKJV)   "But when the Helper comes, whom I shall send to you from the Father, the Spirit of truth who proceeds from the Father, He will testify of Me.

Romans 8:16-17 (NKJV)   The Spirit Himself bears witness with our spirit that we are children of God, [17] and if children, then heirs--heirs of God and joint heirs with Christ, if indeed we suffer with Him, that we may also be glorified together.

The Word

John 5:39 (NKJV)  You search the Scriptures, for in them you think you have eternal life; and these are they which testify of Me. (John 20:30,31)

Produces Faith

Holy Spirit

1 Cor. 12:3 (NKJV)  Therefore I make known to you that no one speaking by the Spirit of God calls Jesus accursed, and no one can say that Jesus is Lord except by the Holy Spirit.

The Word

Romans 10:11-17 (NKJV)   [14] How then shall they call on Him in whom they have not believed? And how shall they believe in Him of whom they have not heard? And how shall they hear without a preacher? [15] And how shall they preach unless they are sent? As it is written: "How beautiful are the feet of those who preach the gospel of peace, Who bring glad tidings of good things!"  16] But they have not all obeyed the gospel. For Isaiah says, "Lord, who has believed our report?" [17] So then faith comes by hearing, and hearing by the word of God.

Wisdom

Holy Spirit

John 16:7 (NKJV)  Nevertheless I tell you the truth. It is to your advantage that I go away; for if I do not go away, the Helper will not come to you; but if I depart, I will send Him to you.

John 16:13 (NKJV)  However, when He, the Spirit of truth, has come, He will guide you into all truth; for He will not speak on His own authority, but whatever He hears He will speak; and He will tell you things to come.

Ephes. 5:18-19 (NKJV)  And do not be drunk with wine, in which is dissipation; but be filled with the Spirit, [19] speaking to one another in psalms and hymns and spiritual songs, singing and making melody in your heart to the Lord,

The Word

Col. 1:5-23;

Col. 1:5 (NKJV)   because of the hope which is laid up for you in heaven, of which you heard before in the word of the truth of the gospel,

Col. 1:9-10 (NKJV)   For this reason we also, since the day we heard it, do not cease to pray for you, and to ask that you may be filled with the knowledge of His will in all wisdom and spiritual understanding; [10] that you may walk worthy of the Lord, fully pleasing Him, being fruitful in every good work and increasing in the knowledge of God;

2 Tim. 3:14-15 (NKJV)   But you must continue in the things which you have learned and been assured of, knowing from whom you have learned them, [15] and that from childhood you have known the Holy Scriptures, which are able to make you wise for salvation through faith which is in Christ Jesus.
