How Does The Holy Spirit Indwell, Guide & Influence Christians?

Part 2 – “A Study of Romans 8:1-27”

Introduction

1. We have previously demonstrated from the scriptures that the Holy Spirit still works today – but He does so ONLY through the word of God which He revealed.

2. He Dwells in Christians in the same way that the Father and Son dwell in us – Through the Word! (John 14:23,24; 2 John 1:7-9)

3. We have demonstrated that the Word of God:

a. Provides everything we need - 2 Timothy 3:16,17

b. Powerful enough to convert, fight with, and build up! - Hebrews 4:12

4. In this study we will continue to examine this subject by examining Rom 8:1-27

I. The Holy Spirit In The Life of The Christian

A. Entrance – through the mind – (8:1-8) . . .

1. Those who are in Christ walk according to the Law of the Spirit (1,2)

2. Christ made forgiveness possible (3,4)

3. The Law of the Spirit is followed by those who set their mind on it – (5-8)

B. Dwells – You must be in the Spirit in order for the Spirit to be in you – (9-11)

1. Since they are walking in accordance with the Law of the Spirit – it can rightly be said that the Holy Spirit has a great influence upon how they live their lives!

a. The Holy Spirit controlled their thinking and actions through the law that He delivered,

b. Christians are instructed to let the “Word of Christ dwell in them richly” – Col. 3:16

2. Although the physical consequences of sin are not avoided by submitting to the Law of the Spirit, the righteousness that is acquired through obedience to the gospel, (Rom. 1:16,17) will bring about victory over death because we will be raised from the dead. (10)

C. Kills – The Deeds of the flesh – (12,13)

1. Serving Christ is our reasonable service – (Romans 12:1,2 . . . By the transforming of our mind)

2. Those who will not submit to the Law of the Spirit will die spiritually, eternally,

3. But . . . Those who PUT TO DEATH through the Spirit the deeds of the flesh, (evil or disgraceful deeds) will live eternally with God!

D. Leads – Unto son-ship, (14)

1. We are lead unto son-ship - [cf. Gal. 3:26,27] (NOT DRUG)

a. For as many as . . . No more and no less . . . (1 Cor. 12:13)

E. Assures – Bears witness/ Hope – (15-25)

1. When we have complied with the “Law of The Spirit” we have confidence.

2. The Holy Spirit revealed what we are to do –

•         Believe – Acts 8:37

•         Confess – Romans 10:9

•         Repent – Acts 17:30

•         Be baptized – 1 Peter 3:21

•         Be faithful – Col. 1:23

•         Confess, Repent & Pray – Acts 8:22; 1 John 1:9

3. Have we done these things? If so – the Holy Spirit bears witness that we are saved thus giving us confidence – If we have not complied with the Law of The Spirit – we have NO HOPE!

4. We are thus given incentive to be faithful despite persecutions and trials in this life -

F. Makes Intercession For Us (26-27)

1. Likewise: Creation groans . . . Christians groan . . . The Holy Spirit groans!

2. The Spirit also helps – We lack understanding regarding the overall plan and purpose of God in our sufferings but we can know what the Holy Spirit has revealed. . . 2 Cor 4:17; 1 Peter 1:6-9

3. Intercession is NOT mediation! 1 Tim. 2:5; cf 2:1-3 We do not see the whole picture . . The Holy Spirit does . . . We see the difficulties.

4. [27] Communication between Deity? - 1 Cor. 2:10 Distinct personalities in the Godhead. – “He, (The Holy Spirit) makes intercession for the saints!”

Conclusion

1. Make a comparison between Romans 8:1-27 and Galatians 3:16-25

a. Are you producing the fruit of the Spirit? John 15:5

b. If not then it is certain that the word of Christ is not dwelling in you richly – Col. 3:12-17

2. Do you have the Father, Son and Holy Spirit?

a. Have you submitted to the Law of the Spirit? (Rom. 8:2)

b. Have you set your mind on the things of the Spirit? (Rom. 8:5,6)

c. If so – then we know that all things work together for good – (Rom. 8:28)

3. If NOT – Obey that which the Holy Spirit has revealed before it is everlastingly too late!!
